Huang revealed that he had been present during the night of the murders in a mountain cave, where Liu killed both Xiang and Zhou in the early hours of the morning. Their bodies were later moved by other New Fourth Army soldiers, and Huang was left wounded.
It wasn't until after the founding of the People's Republic of China that the remains of Xiang and Zhou were finally recovered and properly honored at the Nanjing Martyrs Memorial.
